What is the Independent General Practice?
The IGP is a company that provides Private GP services, Occupational Health, Physiotherapy, Medico-legal appointments, Anti-ageing treatments & Vaccinations to individuals, families & companies. The IGP is the first Private GP practice to be registered by the Healthcare Standards Inspectorate for Wales (HIW). The practice has surgeries in Cardiff City Centre, Cardiff Gate Business Park, Sancta Maria Hospital in Swansea, St. Josephs Hospital in Newport & The Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.
What can the IGP offer me?
Convenience, fast access and flexible consultation times. We aim to see registered patients within 24 hours of their contacting us. Our surgery opening times vary across our surgeries, but appointments are usually available between 09:00 - 17:30 at our Cardiff City Centre surgery. We currently have two evening surgeries (until 20:00) at our Cardiff Gate location on a Tuesday and Thursday. As well as alternating evening sergies at the Bridgend Princess of Wales Hospital & Sancta Maria Hospital in Swansea.
If I register with the IGP do I remain registered with my NHS GP?
YES. The IGP is designed to compliment your NHS service, not replace it. With the patient’s consent we regularly update NHS GP's with relevant information about patient care. However, should a patient not wish us to share information with their NHS GP, we will respect those wishes.
If I have a private health policy, do I need the IGP?
The IGP is not in competition with any of the health care insurance companies or policies. In fact the service compliments any health insurance policy covering specialist care – such as operations or appointments with consultants.
How is this achieved?
Primarily through speed of access. The IGP aims to see a registered patient within 24 hours. We have excellent links to existing private health providers, such as Bupa and the Vale Clinic. An IGP patient in need of referral should receive notification of their appointment with a consultant within 3 working days of visiting us. This can reduce the time that people spend waiting to see a consultant significantly.
How do I register?
Individuals, couples and family groups become clients of the IGP by registering for a Healthcare Plan. This can be paid for monthly or annually, and entitles the client to a certain number of consultations per annum. Our aim is to see our clients regularly. We will be pro-active in contacting them to invite them for necessary health care checks. Too many people simply do not visit their doctor enough – we aim to keep people well, not just treat them promptly when they are not.
Do you need my NHS GP records to make decisions?
No, most out of hours NHS GP care and all A+E departments do not have access to your records either. We would request that all new patients complete the Health Questionnaire and Patient Agreement Form prior to their first consultation.
What about prescriptions?
We issue private prescriptions if a medication is indicated. These do not qualify for the NHS fixed charge (or free) prescription. Many items can be less expensive on private prescriptions, and these prescriptions can be dispensed at any retail pharmacy.
What about new drugs such as Viagra and other new developments?
Exciting new treatment advances are constantly being developed and approved. However, access to these is often restricted through the NHS due to a lack of resources. Our doctors will discuss with you your treatment options.
Can I get Private GP Services on my existing Health Insurance?
Your policy will not cover consultations. However, this position is currently being reviewed and may change. Your existing health insurance may cover the cost of clinically indicated investigations and x-rays.
