Why Are Vaccine Assessments Necessary?

Planning to travel abroad in the coming weeks? If so, it's worth checking the vaccination requirements in the country you're headed to. The Covid-19 pandemic changed travel health requirements around the world. But even before the pandemic, travel vaccines were part and parcel of visiting certain countries and regions.

If you believe you're required to have vaccinations before you travel, the first thing to do is contact the Foreign Office or visit the destination's country's official government websites for advice. Alternatively, you can book a pre-travel vaccine assessment at your nearest iGP clinic.

Even if the country you're visiting doesn't have recommended or mandated vaccinations, a vaccine assessment will dig deep into your personal circumstances to ascertain which (if any) vaccinations you should have.

Who Should Have a Travel Vaccine Assessment?

While vaccinations are a condition of travel in cetain countries for certain diseases, there are vulnerable people who may need a personalised vaccine assessment. They include:

  • The elderly

  • People with weakened immune systems

  • Pregnant women

  • Children

  • People with long-standing illnesses

  • People taking long-term medication

  • If you fall into one of these categories, you can book your expedited vaccine assessment at an iGP clinic in Swansea, Cardiff or Newport.

What Diseases Require a Travel Vaccine?

There are certain diseases even well-immunised British citizens may be vulnerable to when they travel abroad. They include:

  • Polio

  • Typhoid

  • Cholera

  • Hepatitis A

  • If you're struggling to get an NHS vaccination for any of these diseases in time for your travel date, contact iGP for a private travel vaccination today.

There are a few less common diseases that are paarticularly prevalent in certain countries and regions of the world. In some cases, vaccination for these diseases is a condition of entry.

Anyone visiting these areas should consider getting vaccinated for the following diseases:

  • Rabies

  • Meningitis

  • Encephalitis

  • Hepatitis B

  • Tuberculosis

  • Yellow fever

  • Do I Really Need a Vaccination?

The simplest way to find out if you need a vaccination for travel is to visit the Foreign Office website. Alternatively, you can speak to an iGP vaccination specialist about your travel plans.

Ideally, you should visit a vaccination centre at least eight weeks before you travel. This is because some of the vaccines listed above need several weeks to generate maximum immunity. You may also be required to undergo a series of vaccinations before you're fit to travel.

During your private vaccine assessment, you'll be asked a series of questions about your travel plans. The destination country isn't the only factor to consider when assessing the risk of contracting certain diseases. What you're doing is also important.

You could be at a heightened risk if you're planning to do the following:

  • Go backpacking

  • Travel extensively in largely rural areas

  • Stay in low-cost hostels

  • Camp out

  • Spend several months abroad

  • You'll also be asked about your health history and any medication you're taking. Once the clinician has a clear idea of your health and travel plans, they can recommend which vaccines to take.

Your level of risk may increase further if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • You'll be spending time in a medical environment

  • You'll be coming into close contact with animals

  • You'll be working as a volunteer or aid specialist in a high-risk setting

  • You'll be away from the UK for an extended period

  • Book Your Travel Vaccination Assessment in Cardiff, Swansea or Newport

Contact iGP today to book a fast, hassle-free travel vaccine assessment with an experienced clinician. Once your state of health and travel plans have been fully assessed, you'll be a travel vaccination programme tailored to your needs.
